Alum Lauren Shantz is making her Missouri statement

March 18, 2025 by Damilola R. Oyedeji

Missouri State University alumna Lauren Shantz has built a successful career in public affairs.

In six years, she has gone from working as an intern to now serving as vice president of public affairs at the Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce.

Shantz became associated with the chamber through a family connection. Her mother, who worked in the Missouri Senate, suggested she reach out to the chamber.

In 2019, Shantz earned an internship there, and what began as a temporary opportunity quickly evolved into a career-defining moment.

“It wasn’t necessarily what I expected to go into, but it turned into a passion,” she said.

Since then, Shantz has navigated multiple leadership transitions and taken on greater responsibilities at the chamber. She now leads public affairs efforts to advocate for policies that benefit local businesses and the broader community.

“One thing I enjoy most about working at the chamber is we get to do something different every day, and all of it makes a significant positive impact on our community,” Shantz said.

“Also, not only do I get to do really meaningful things, but I get to do them with an incredible team who wants to see the success of Springfield and the region just as much as I do.”

MSU’s “close-knit” feel a big draw

A native of Jefferson City, Missouri, Shantz started her undergraduate studies at the University of Missouri-Columbia (Mizzou). She transferred to Missouri State in 2016, where she pursued a bachelor’s degree in public relations with a minor in journalism.

“Coming from Mizzou, I knew I wanted a college experience that felt more close-knit and community-minded,” Shantz said. “That type of involvement and feeling was present from my first day at MSU, and that meant something to me as a transfer student.”

After completing her undergraduate degree in December 2018, Shantz continued her education at Missouri State, earning a Master of Public Administration in 2023.

Shantz credits her time at MSU for shaping her career.

“Even though my degree isn’t 100% tied to what I do now, everything I learned, such as writing, event planning, communication strategy and AP style, is applicable in my job today,” she said.

Making an impact

Shantz said her time at MSU helped develop her passion for communication, advocacy and community impact. Among her proudest achievements is leading the chamber’s annual Community Leadership Visit, where 85 local leaders travel to other cities to exchange ideas and bring best practices back to Springfield.

Beyond her professional role, Shantz remains connected to MSU. She was recently named an associate trustee for the Missouri State Foundation, advocating for university funding and growth.

“Being able to push for initiatives like expanding MSU’s degree offerings, including PhDs, feels personal because MSU shaped so much of my journey,” she said.

Shantz’s talent and contributions as a young professional have not gone unnoticed. She was named to Springfield Business Journal’s 40 Under 40 list in 2023.

Advice for student Bears

For current students at Missouri State, Shantz emphasizes the value of taking advantage of opportunities that come around. Gaining on-the-job or hands-on experience is essential, as is networking. She also encourages students to seek mentorship and learn from professionals in their field.

“Take opportunities even if they don’t seem like a perfect fit,” she advised. “The skills you gain will serve you in ways you might not expect,” she said.

Scouts earn badges at MSU’s Merit Badge University

February 21, 2025 by Lynn M. Lansdown

Missouri State University resumed its Merit Badge University (MBU) program by holding a one-day camp Jan. 25, 2025, on the Springfield campus.

In total, 116 scouts from St. Louis, Kansas City, Joplin, Lebanon, Webb City, Aurora, Carl Junction, Carthage, Ozark, Clever, Springfield, Republic, Nixa, Branson, Rogersville and St. Robert participated in the event.

Program director Dr. Michael Suttmoeller, associate professor in the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice and coordinator of the Conservation Law Enforcement Certificate, said several RCASH faculty volunteered to help the scouts earn various merit badges.

Suttmoeller acknowledged MSU’s faculty and RCASH Associate Dean Dr. Jason Jolley for their support and effort. “I really appreciate all of the hard work and preparation that they each did to deliver high quality courses for the scouts,” he said.

Reviving a great idea

When Suttmoeller learned that MSU had hosted a merit badge program several years ago, he decided reviving the program would be a great idea. He immediately began organizing the event, recruiting faculty and arranging the logistics.

“A merit badge university was previously held at MSU, with the last date being 2016. None had been held since that time until 2025,” Suttmoeller said.

“I have been exposed to merit badge universities at other institutions and recognized that this was a program that could benefit both Scouting America as well as MSU.”

Two faculty members of the Reynolds College of Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities (RCASH) have been selected for Missouri State University’s 2025 community service award.

Associate Professor Dr. Judith Martinez and Associate Professor Dr. Elizabeth Dudash-Buskirk received the Excellence in Community Service Award during a ceremony Jan. 28.

The award recognizes MSU personnel who give back to their communities outside their normal work capacity.

“The 2025 recipients have all exceled at demonstrating how the public affairs mission can be put into action,” said Stacey Trewatha-Bach, assistant director of the Office of Public Affairs Support.

The award is presented annually to two faculty and two staff members. Each honoree receives a plaque and a one-time cash award of $1,500, funded by the MSU Foundation.

MSU staff members Carrie High, Custodial Services, and Crockett Oaks III, Business Support Services at the West Plains campus, were also recognized. [Read more…] about Two RCASH faculty members recognized for community service

Carillon documentary to debut on Ozarks Public Television July 25

July 10, 2024 by Lynn M. Lansdown

A documentary on Missouri State University’s Jane A. Meyer Carillon, will premiere on Ozarks Public Television (OPT) July 25, 2024, at 8:30 p.m.

“Legacy of the Bells: Music of the Missouri State University Carillon” marks many firsts for its creators — the Spring 2024 Documentary Film Practicum (MED 512) students and their instructor, Jason Ferber.

Ferber’s very first assignment as a per course instructor at MSU was to teach the 10 students enrolled in MED 512 for the Department of Communication, Media, Journalism and Film (CMJF).

This was also the first time MED 512 students Emily Day and Patrick Conell had ever worked on a documentary.

The class’s efforts resulted in another first.

According to Ferber, although OPT used to air a student-produced program called “Ozarks News Journal,” no student-made documentary had ever been shown on OPT before.

That is, until the MED 512 production.

Bringing work experience into the classroom

Ferber, who doesn’t hesitate to say he’s “proud to be a Bear,” began working at OPT in 2001. But his ties to MSU began much earlier.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in 1994, back when MSU was still called Southwest Missouri State University. In 2021 he graduated from MSU with an MS in Educational Technology.

Among Ferber’s many tasks working for OPT over the years has been to train students in the basics of broadcasting.

“In my position at the station, I have informally trained hundreds of students and volunteers to operate television production equipment,” he said.

It seemed only natural to Ferber to continue with that instruction in his MED 512 course.

“On the first day of class, I presented to my students the concept of trying to make a program that would air on Ozarks Public Television,” he said.

Students take ownership

OPT features educational and informative local history programs, so Ferber asked the students to suggest possible topics for a documentary project.

He then asked them to vote for their final choice so that they would feel real ownership — the project would be their decision.

The class elected to make a documentary about the Jane A. Meyer Carillon.

“Once the topic was picked, we had a class meeting to assess everyone’s skills and make preliminary role assignments,” Ferber said.

Ferber required all 10 students to work on the project in some manner, including research and recording of B-roll footage.

The project took 15 weeks, nearly the entire semester, he said.

From nurse to advocate

June 28, 2024 by Damilola R. Oyedeji

Student receives diploma at commencement ceremony

With a new degree in hand and a passion for change, Missouri State University alumna Cheri Montgomery is committed to improving accessibility and empowering people with disabilities.

Spurred on by her desire to advocate for the disabled community, Montgomery enrolled in MSU’s master’s program in communication in 2022 and graduated in spring 2024.

Montgomery had previously worked as a nurse specializing in special needs/disabled pediatrics for about 20 years, but she could not continue and decided to pursue graduate studies instead.

“I had to stop working as a nurse because my condition changed from walking to needing a wheelchair due to multiple sclerosis,” Montgomery said.

Montgomery cited high-performing students, a convenient location, affordability and the institution’s commitment to quality education as factors influencing her choice to attend.

Also, having children who graduated from MSU made her a longstanding supporter of the university.

Commitment to inclusion

Since graduating in the spring, Montgomery has dedicated herself to advocating for people with disabilities.

“My history is with pediatric disability, so I’m staying committed to advocating for an inclusive society,” Montgomery said. “There are no reasons for anyone to be left behind.”

Currently, she works with Rides 4 Ability, a company that provides non-emergency transportation for those with or without disabilities, particularly in rural areas. The organization serves people of all ages, helping them get to medical appointments, meetings, grocery stores and more.

“I do administrative work like updating contracts and applying for new ones. We’re currently applying to establish a contract with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs,” Montgomery said.

She enjoys the services of Empower: abilities, a Springfield nonprofit offering services that empower people with disabilities to thrive in the community.

“This organization helps disabled people in various ways such as house modifications — building ramps and installing grab bars in bathrooms and showers. They helped me find employment with Rides 4 Ability,” Montgomery said.

She described a current initiative of Rides 4 Ability that trains individuals to evaluate restaurants, providing them $15 for their efforts.

The evaluations cover aspects like wheelchair accessibility of doors and bathrooms, respectful treatment by wait staff and the presence of accessible sidewalks to the restaurant.

“They’re compiling a database of disability-friendly restaurants in Springfield. This effort will enhance the dining experiences of individuals with disabilities, enabling them to enjoy meals with friends and family,” she said.

Montgomery has received her training and awaits the opportunity to participate in the survey. [Read more…] about From nurse to advocate
