Students in the Cell and Molecular Biology program at Missouri State University are doing some cutting edge science in the classroom. In BMS 525: Molecular Biology students are designing and performing experiments to modify DNA in the baker’s yeast genome. If the students’ experiments are successful then they will have created a brand new strain of yeast that is different from any other organism. The genome editing technique is known as CRISPR and is an exciting new technology that is at the forefront of genetic experiments. The course instructor, Dr. Randi Ulbricht, has published the student’s work in an educational journal, CourseSource.
