Digital Exposure and Eye Health

May 9, 2022 by Deidre Mings

People in the U.S. now spend an average of 17 hours a day in front of screens, according to One Poll survey, 2020. Smartphones, computer monitors, and like devices all emit blue light. Blue light exposure has been linked to blurred vision, dry eyes, tired eyes, and other symptoms of digital eye strain.

Even if you don’t wear prescription glasses, an annual eye exam is an easy and cost-effective way to take care of your eyes and overall health. With VSP LightCare™, members can use their benefits from a VSP® network eye doctor to get non-prescription sunglasses or non-prescription, ready-made blue light filtering eyewear, instead of prescription eyewear.

MSU offers 2 vision plan options with VSP, a base plan and a premium plan. Both plans offer a $10-copay, yearly well-vision exam.

Vision related expenses including co-pays, eyeglasses, and contacts are eligible expenses under the Cafeteria/flex spending plan, allowing for additional savings through tax savings. Employees currently enrolled in the plan can submit eligible expenses to https://asiflex.com/MissouriState/Forms.aspx .

Enrolled in the Accident plan? Did you know that the Physician’s treatment benefit of $50/$75 can be claimed on additional services not related to an accident? Including, an eye exam.

Enrollment/Changes can be made to the vision plan, Cafeteria/flexible spending, and accident plans, yearly during open enrollment (November 1st– December 1st) , or within 31 days of a qualifying event.
