Missouri State University’s Department of Theatre and Dance was well-represented at the Speech and Theatre Association of Missouri (STAM) Conference Sept. 21-23.
According to STAM’s website, the conference gives members “the opportunity to come together with other professionals in their field” to collaborate, learn and celebrate.

Missouri State University’s School of the Arts, part of the Judith Enyeart Reynold’s College of the Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities, was honored with the Arts Champion Award at the 38th Annual Ozzie Awards Oct. 14, 2023.
In addition, MSU’s Dr. Steve Willis, professor of art education, was honored with the Ozzie’s Excellence in Arts Education award.
The Ozzie Awards are sponsored by the Springfield Regional Arts Council (SRAC). The SRAC supports visual, performing, literary and film/media arts organizations across 27 Missouri counties.

Filmed in summer 2020, “Sick Girl” is a comedy about a woman who feels she and her friends have grown apart. The film is distributed by Lionsgate Movies.
“This is a ‘be careful what you wish for film’ where a simple little lie begins to tear a whole community apart,” said Dr. Kurt Heinlein, professor of theatre and dance at Missouri State University and film stunt director.

The spring semester of Asa Leininger’s senior year presented him with a conundrum – he wasn’t sure what he was going to do after he graduated.
Leininger, who graduated from Missouri State University in May 2023 with bachelor of arts degrees in history and theatre, had no idea what his immediate future would look like.
“I really had no clue how I was going to apply what I had learned in my university studies within a professional setting,” Leininger said. “Likewise, I knew that I needed more stability than what professional summer-stock Shakespeare companies (theatre) had to offer.”
It was at that time that MSU’s Career Center hosted an information session with Returned Peace Corps Volunteers, sponsored by the College of Education and MSU’s Peace Corps Prep program. Leininger attended the session and was immediately “hooked.”
