Spring Elections

April 7, 2020 by Abdillahi Dirie

It is time for you to voice your opinion in the 2020-2021 student body election. There are many things on this year’s ballot and they are all important. The ballot contains the candidates running for Student Body President, Vice President, and Senior Class President, as well as, a new mental health student fee, a Wyrick project, and a senior class gift.

Mental Health Fee

The proposed new student fee of $8 per semester would support hiring more counselors and expand mental health resources to the Counseling Center. Missouri State has experienced a rapid increase in student demands for counseling over the past several years. During the past two academic years, there has been a waiting list, and in fall 2019, it reached 203 students. I encourage you to vote yes to support hiring more counselors and mental health resources for the counseling center.

Wyrick Project

This year’s Wyrick project is to combine the Multicultural Resource Center and the Annex and move it to the, now, Office of Student Engagement space. This would then move the Office of Student Engagement to the level one game center. Currently, the MRC and the Annex are separated. Combining both locations into one and locating it in the PSU right across Starbucks will increase cultural engagement. This project will provide students a place to have a central location among other campus resources, more efficient space utilization within the PSU, and more space with the opportunity for visibility. I encourage you all to vote yes for this project that will enhance the student experience at Missouri State!

Senior Class Gift

Lastly, On this ballot is the Senior Class Gift vote and only Juniors and Seniors can vote for this issue. This year, we are doing a painted bear statue with Campus Recreation. The Bear Statues are the vision of President Smart, and the FRC is one of the most prominent buildings on campus. The Bear will feature a design (being finished now) that encapsulates the perseverance of our class, especially through these current times. I hope you vote in favor, and help leave the Class of 2020 legacy at Missouri State!

Student Body Candidates:

Cole Howerton, President and Chelsey Small, Vice President

First up, we have Cole Howerton running for Student Body President and Chelsey Small running for Vice President! Renee Sinclair is serving as their Campaign Manager. Cole Howerton is a sophomore studying History. He is the current Director of Public Affairs for SGA. Cole wants to make campus inclusive for all students and help improve everyone’s individual campus experience. Chelsey Small is a junior studying Exercise and Movement Science. After being a SOAR Leader and serving as Director of Health and Wellness for SGA, she has learned how to use her voice to make a change in the community. Chelsey wants to help students at MSU feel the power of their voice too.

Together, they will combine their experiences to impact Mental Health, Inclusivity, and Communication at MSU. They want all students to feel confident in their resources and their chances for success. Most importantly, they want to hear your voice and improve Missouri State by your choice. Tara Orr, President and Blake Haynes, Vice President

Next up, we have Tara Orr running for Student Body President and Blake Haynes running for Vice President! Apryl Myers is serving as their Campaign Manager. Tara Orr is from Blue Springs, Missouri and is involved in with Student Government Association as the Chief of Staff, Alpha Delta Pi Sorority, and other leadership programs. Tara’s involvement throughout the years has motivated her to put her skills to the test and run for student body president. Blake is also from Blue Springs, Missouri. Over time, he created a meaningful relationship with his running partner. He discovered that both of them were first-generation students with the ambition to make an impact during their college experience. Blake has been a part of the Student Government Association since 2017, an active member in Sigma Tau Gamma Fraternity, a University Ambassador, and on the Greek Week Committee. As his roles became more eminent and his drive flourished, Blake decided the time was right to pour into the campus community like those who have poured into him.

Tara and Blake want to use their past experiences and innovate Missouri State! They want to focus on the importance of Student Success, Diversity and Inclusion, and Student Wellness if elected. Through these main points, they would like to increase opportunities for students to be the best prepared for post-college. They want to better diversity and inclusion efforts and make sure student wellness is at the forefront to better Missouri State.

Her previous leadership experience includes Chief Elections Commissioner on SGA, Vice President of Membership Development on the Panhellenic Executive Board, and various positions in her sorority. She also currently works in the Office of Student Affairs as a Student Assistant to Dr. Dee Siscoe. These experiences have instilled in her a love of university traditions and campus unity, which is what Allison wants to bring to the role of Senior Class President.

Her campaign theme is “What’s your Legacy?” The concept of a legacy is central in a student’s last year of undergrad, and Allison wanted to inspire that in the Class of 2021 during her campaign. You can connect with Allison on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter at @allison4mostate!

Bears are back… back again!

August 14, 2019 by Abdillahi Dirie

Hello!

I can’t believe we are getting ready to be back on campus and start the school year. I hope everyone had a great summer. I know I definitely did! This summer, I enjoyed being a SOAR leader and welcoming incoming students and their families, and all I can say is that Missouri State’s future is bright!

This summer has been very busy so let me bring you up to speed on everything new! First of all, our State Government gifted Missouri State a $10 million increase in our core operating funding and $2.85 million in a one-time fund to expand the nursing program. With the increased funding, we were able to save students money and only increase tuition minimally, and were able to give faculty and staff a raise that they deserve. For our student workers, you also got a raise! With this appropriation, Missouri State was able to increase the minimum wage to $8.60.

As you walk around campus, you will also see some changes. Woods House was renovated this summer and looks incredible! In the Plaster Student Union (PSU), you will see a brand new Starbucks layout and design. Grill Nation and Papa Johns are out but that means new options! The PSU will now have Freddy’s and a Pasta and Salad option named Madison Ave Pasta Company! So don’t forget to add those Boomer Meals and meal plans. You can defer it to your account for the first three weeks of school!

Lastly, get ready for more bears on campus! More bear statues are expected to be around campus and in the community! The College of Business recently installed a bear outside of Glass Hall, thanks to the Class of 2018 for the generous donation. Student Government Association (SGA) partnered up with the PSU to do a paint-a-bear statue contest and we received great submissions, so stay tuned to see what the bear will look like on the south lawn near McDonald Arena.

I hope you enjoyed these updates! If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please reach me at Abdillahi1997@live.missouristate.edu!

SGA Supports the B.E.A.R Fee to appear on the Homecoming Ballot

September 24, 2013 by Addison Reed

Football Stadium Upgrade

Senate has recently passed a resolution supporting the B.E.A.R. Fee to be placed on the Fall 2013 Homecoming ballot for all students to vote on.

If the fee passes

If the B.E.A.R Fee (Bear Experience And Recreation Fee) passes, students will be charged $50/semester that would go towards building and renovating 4 recreational facilities on campus. Three brand new facilities would be built including a Sand Volleyball Court, Field Hockey Field, and Soccer/Track Field.  Renovations of Plaster Sports Complex would replace the current student section on the east side of the field.  An additional fund of $200,000 would go towards a Student Experience Fund that would help make the game day experience more enjoyable.

If the fee doesn’t pass

If the B.E.A.R Fee does not pass, a few things will still happen. The Field Hockey Field will be constructed no matter what because our team is at a disadvantage for home games because of the inadequate turf. The student section of Plaster Sports Complex would be torn down as it has been deemed unsafe and all fans will sit on the West side.  The track will still be constructed regardless so that the Women’s Track team will remain in compliance with Title IX.

Details about the fee

The date of completion is set for Fall 2014 and all students will not pay into the fee until all facilities are completed.  The time and quality of this project is determined by money raised privately and from the B.E.A.R. Fee. If the fee does not pass, the quality will be different than if it did pass.

SGA Supports Long-Range Scheduling Database

February 21, 2013 by Riana Sears

Senate has recently passed a resolution supporting the implementation of the periodicity and modality database. This involves a uniform and easily accessible database for students and faculty to view and input long-range scheduling plans for preparation and registration purposes.

The database extends for three years and displays summer, fall and spring intersession course schedules. It also lists the course’s modality (blended, I-NET, seated, etc.).

A team assembled of faculty and staff has been developing the database, with student input, for several years and it is now in the final stages of development. The database will be available to students by the Summer 2013 semester.

SGA Approves Extension of Library Hours during Finals Week

December 4, 2012 by Riana Sears

Student Government Association has approved a resolution in support of extending Meyer Library’s hours of operation during final examination periods to 24 hours per day.

The Student Government Association passed a similar resolution in the spring of 2011 to extend the library’s hours until 2 a.m. throughout the year. Considering that students have used the library heavily during these extended hours, SGA and the Meyer Library staff are excited to see the turnout during “Finals Week.”

After considering student feedback regarding the library’s hours of operation, the library staff and Thomas Peters, dean of library services, will provide 24-hour support during the final examination period this fall.

Instead of its regular hours of 7 a.m. to 2 a.m. Mon-Thurs, beginning Sun. Dec. 9 through Thurs. Dec 13, Meyer Library will stay open non-stop.

Students present in the library during these extended hours can expect various promotions from the library staff aimed at keeping students motivated for their exams.

For more information, please contact Riana Sears, Chief Communications Officer at Riana21@live.missouristate.edu.
