Several academic advisors in our Business Advisement Center attended the annual Missouri Academic Advising Association (MACADA) conference held at the Lake of the Ozarks in September. Karmen Brewer, Bethany Laws, Brittany Lescano, & Kim Stagner won “Best of Conference” for their presentation, “Exploring Advising Territories: Using a Personal Touch Approach to Engage and Impact Students.” This presentation highlighted different techniques for demonstrating a personal touch with diverse student populations. As a result of winning best of conference, they are invited to present at the Region 7 National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) conference during the spring semester.
- Amir Behzadan, associate professor, Technology and Construction Management, has received two significant National Science Foundation (NSF) grants this fall.
- “Real-Time Feedback-Enabled Simulation Modeling of Dynamic Construction Processes Funding,” which will begin January 1, 2016, is a three-year, $275,000 grant. This project supports fundamental research to enhance construction decision-making accuracy by reducing uncertainties. Figures show that only 30% of construction projects finish on time and within budget; therefore, the accuracy and timeliness of operational-level decision-making in construction projects is of utmost importance.
- “Collaborative Research: Strategies for Learning: Augmented Reality and Collaborative Problem-Solving for Building” which began September 15, 2015 is a two-year $27,000 grant. In this collaborative project with Florida International University (FIU), a design-based research approach will be used to integrate Augmented Reality (AR) with Building Information Modeling (BIM), visual simulations, and interactive lessons to support collaborative learning. Specifically, the research team will examine if and how the integration of these technologies in pedagogy can improve students’ problem-solving and collaborative learning skills, leading to the design of more sustainable and better performing buildings.
- Melissa Burnett, professor, Marketing, continues to receive the COB Star Professorship Award 2014-2017. This award is given to a faculty member who demonstrates the following characteristics: succeeds or helps students succeed in a prominent or prestigious way, teaches students real-world applications that prepare them for success in their careers, advances the culture of professionalism and integrity in the college, and raises the national profile of the college and university.
- Barry Cobb, interim department head, Management, published a paper entitled “Accurate lead time demand modeling and optimal inventory policies in continuous review systems” in the International Journal of Production Economics. The paper was co-authored with Alan Johnson from the Air Force Institute of Technology, and Antonio Salmerón and Rafael Rumí from the University of Almeria.
- Jason DeBode and Corey Fox, assistant professors, Management, received International Travel Awards from the Graduate College to present their research at the Annual Meeting of the Academy of Management in Vancouver, Canada. DeBode’s presentation was entitled “It takes all kinds: A closer look at diversity in the executive suite.” Dr. Fox’s presentation was entitled “An exploration into the interplay of employee spirituality, psychological capital and performance.” Additionally, Dr. Fox received a “Best Reviewer Award” from the Business Policy & Strategy Division at the meeting.

- Michele Granger, professor, Management, has been notified that Kent State University and the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising adopted her textbook entitled The Fashion Industry and Its Careers: An Introduction published by Bloomsbury Publishing Inc. 2015.
- Four faculty members have been awarded the COB Daisy Portenier Loucks Research Professorship. This annual award is given to professors based on the prior year’s research quality and cumulative research productivity of high quality research with an emphasis on discipline based research.
