RAIN, RAIN, RAIN (go away!!). We have some cracking in several grape varieties and are worrying about rots. We are also seeing bird depradation in Chardonel, Seyval Blanc and Cayuga White. We netted half of the Seyval Blanc and half of the Cayuga White in the Research Vineyard to protect the fruit from birds. We have already seen some bird depredation in the Seyval. This year, we are leaving the other half of the Seyval and Cayuga blocks un-netted but have sprayed Avian Control, a dimethyl anthanilate compound, that is labeled to repel birds.
