What's happening in the field?

At the Missouri State Fruit Experiment Station

Planting FES station grape releases

May 29, 2019 by Marilyn Odneal

Some of the older grape cultivar releases were planted today. Hardwood cuttings were collected in winter of the surviving cultivars. We collected cuttings of Beaver, Bokay, Challenger, Eleven Point, Gasconade, Ozark Prize, Piney and Tetra. Unfortunately Roubidoux, St. Francis, Blue Eye, North Fork, Bryant, G-10 and G-2964 were lost and could not be salvaged from the old planting. See Fruit Cultivars Released by the State Fruit Experiment Station.

We planted them in two rows (10 plants each cultivar if available. If 10 plants were not available, then we will plan to propagate some softwood cuttings this year to fill in the gaps).

Row 8 from north to south include Beaver (10), Bokay (10), Challenger (10) and Eleven Point (10) and Row 9 from north to south includes Gasconade (6), Ozark Prize (5), Piney (10) and Tetra (3).

Holes are dug to plant the station grape releases.

Emily and Beth plant the rooted cuttings. They will then put grow tubes around the plants to protect them.
