We began planting the Chambourcin and Norton for the addition to the Winery Vineyard today. We evaluated a soil pit with the expertise of Tom DeWitt earlier and it was determined that internal water drainage would be adequate, so berms were not necessary. The site originally was bermed for chestnuts so we just planted over the existing undulations. The vineyard was staked out and glyphosate was used to kill weeds in the vineyard row. End posts were set and then line posts were installed. The Chambourcin block (western 5 rows) have line posts set 6 feet apart while the Norton block (eastern 5 rows) are set 8 feet apart. The irrigation was installed and run for two days before planting. We planted Chambourcin today and one row of Norton. We will finish up the Norton tomorrow.
