Members of Assessment Council had their second meeting of the semester this past Tuesday. Assessment Council is a provost’s council which meets monthly throughout the academic year. The Office of Assessment sent the council the information below as a follow up:
- We sent out NSSE reports to those who asked on Tuesday. If you are interested but had not requested anything, here’s the NSSE Campus Mapping document. Email us a request, and we’ll be happy to get that data to you.
- Apply for Assessment Grants and encourage your colleagues.
- Here’s an example of a possible grant. Ask students to write for one minute at the beginning of class regarding what they know about the day’s topic(s). At the end of class, ask students to write about what they learned and what questions they have. Informally review at the end of the class and use that information at the beginning of the next to answer questions and to get a general sense of student learning. For the “report,” you can ask students if this was helpful to their thinking and you can tell us if it was helpful to your teaching.
- In the conversation about NSSE and prompt feedback, Dr. Senger suggested that student perceptions of prompt feedback could be improved by explicitly sharing when they would see the feedback and providing some clear expectations. He saw a marked improvement on student evaluations. You can find a blog about it on our website. This would be another great thing to try for an assessment grant.
- We came up with some questions and next steps to share with the Provost on Annual Reports
- We will be getting started early next week on student feedback on the fee structure web pages.
