Our goal in the Office of Assessment is to support faculty who are looking closely at student learning. Congratulations to these faculty currently working on projects.
Dr. Alana Mantie-Kozlowski, Psychology: She was wanting supplies to facilitate “Support focus groups with students or alumni to ask questions related to program learning outcomes.” She indicated that she will initiate this in Summer 2020 and complete by the end of Fall 2020. I know at one point Keri was going to touch base with her to see what this is going to look like now considering Covid-19. Funds transfer requested. Keri will be sharing with her student-led focus group resources.
Dr. Ching-Wen Chang, Reading Foundations & Educational Technology; Her application originally requested funds for “Lunch at the MSU Union Club for 12 Advisory Board members for the biannual (Spring 2020 and Fall 2020) meetings; and $35 Bookstore gift cards (x8)” There have been conversations back and forth and instead of food, she would like to utilize gift cards for participants. Dr. Tracey Glaessgen, Center for Academic Success and Transition:
She wants to have a small group of instructors talk through the course goals and student learning outcomes associated with GEP 101. She wants to do a $50 gift card to six instructors. Memo sent approving. Get gift cards and coordinate gift reporting forms.
Kimmy Walker, Academic Advising Center: Kimmy had originally asked for lunch for a group “…to establish advising practices and measures used, the AATC will be able to measure our effectiveness and adapt accordingly when necessary. The data collected will allow us to better serve our students through advising.”
Dr. Dana Palilunas & Dr. Tim Daugherty, Psychology: Submitted in early April but at end of grant proposal they indicate that the project will not start until Fall 2020 – so if they are awarded the grant they would like it to be disbursed in next fiscal year. They want to use funds to incentivize “…up to the first twelve faculty members for their efforts during the pilot project…to study the effectiveness of peer consultation as one source of professional development.” Memo sent granting proposal.
Dr. Suneeta Thomas, English: Suneeta has requested to incentivize faculty for the extra work involved in assessment. She proposed surveying students regarding the effectiveness of zoom lectures and will then revise future teaching methodologies based on outcome of survey. Memo sent granting.
Dr. Steven Senger, Mathematics: He would like to provide gift cards to students for participating in a survey to determine “…which methods of delivery are most effective for online learning…”. He wants to then use this information to make modifications to instructional media. Memo sent approving. Get gift cards and coordinate gift reporting forms.
Dr. Gordon Tsubira, Occupational Therapy: Gordon would like to facilitate a focus group with students or alumni to ask questions related to program learning outcomes. This will help to make modifications “…to improve the clinical reasoning of occupational students…” He wants to use 8 gift cards and then do a departmental transfer of $100 to cover paperwork and office supplies. Dr. Avery Russell, Biology: Avery will use the grant to pay student wages to develop BIO 371 entomology course and insect collection. Memo sent granting. Do departmental transfer.
Michael Hammond: Michael has a proposed title of “Comparing knowledge-based learning with Competency-based learning in an online versus seated class environment.” He would like the money to pay a stipend to the instructor (him). He intends to utilize “surveys and student assignment results in online versus seated class environments” and will share his conclusions with other instructors so that they can “incorporate use outcomes in their online and/or seated classes.” He states that the timeframe is Summer/Fall 2020. Dr. Judith Martinez: Judith wants to pay incentives to students to fill out a survey, then participate in discussion groups over a two-semester time period to study “Social Distance vs Physical Distance: Analyzing strategies to maintain student engagement and motivation during the COVID-19 transition to virtual learning.” Memo sent approving. Dr. Monika Feeney: Monika would like to “explore the satisfaction of virtual graduation in a time of stress” and facilitate “…focus groups with students or alumni to ask questions related to program learning outcomes”. She has requested funds to purchase “Flying Pigs” charms for each student. Monika states that this will “Assist in planning future nursing graduations in abnormal times, by gaging student satisfaction with virtual graduation 2020.” She has already started this work and indicates it will be completed in June 2020. Dr. Bernard Kitheka, Kinesiology: Bernard is working with other Kinesiology faculty and they are each submitting a Grant Proposal per your conversations with them. The project is to conduct a seminar series to assess and strengthen research knowledge and skills for both undergrad and grad students in KIN program.
