In my next to last message, I share some lessons learned during my tenure as president. I’m only sharing three, but I feel like I could write a book — a small book.
First, leadership style matters. I’ve developed what I hope is seen as a compassionate leadership style. It’s characterized by being accessible, approachable, authentic, empathetic, kind and positive. It means communicating broadly, being transparent and accepting input from many. But it also includes holding people accountable for results while showing grace where appropriate.
Second, both competence and relationships matter. How we achieved doctoral status is a great example of this. We used data to make the case to the Coordinating Board that Missouri State could capably deliver doctoral programs. However, before making that case, we built real relationships with each member of the board and the commissioner in the years leading up to when we presented the request. Following the presentation, we aggressively advocated for approval. This was very important to Missouri State. We didn’t want to leave anything to chance.
Finally, diversity matters. I’ve seen this as my leadership team evolved over time. When the room included people of all ages, color and political viewpoints, as well as more women and those with different experiences, the discussions were more robust, the ideas more interesting and the decisions more inclusive and successful.
Stay tuned for my final thoughts next week, before I close my office door one last time.
Thanks for all you do for Missouri State.
