Spring brings special energy to campus. It’s a time when we pause to celebrate all we’ve accomplished together this academic year. Across Missouri State University, awards banquets and recognition events highlight Bear excellence.
I’ve had the privilege of attending many of these gatherings in recent weeks. Each one tells a powerful story about the depth of talent at our university and the impact of our mission in action. They remind me that our commitment to student success and public affairs is not just aspirational. It’s lived out every day.
Here are a few of the celebrations that showcase Bear spirit and pride.
Recognizing our student-athletes
We recently honored our student-athletes at both the Maroon and White Banquet and Scholar-Athlete Awards ceremony and the Bears Choice Awards.
At the 14th annual Maroon and White event, a record 292 student-athletes were honored for achieving a minimum 3.25 cumulative grade-point average for all semesters at Missouri State. They represent all 19 of the university’s intercollegiate programs.
That academic excellence carried into a night celebrating the best of Bears athletics at the 17th annual Bears Choice Awards. Together, these events highlight the discipline, resilience and teamwork that define our Bears.
Recognizing academics and organizations
The STAR Awards celebrated outstanding student leaders and organizations making a difference on campus and in the community. Honors ranged from Freshman of the Year to the Student Government Association Initiative Award and Organization of the Year.
These students and organizations demonstrate ethical leadership, cultural competence and community engagement. With more than 300 student organizations at Missouri State, it’s inspiring to see the many ways our students choose to get involved and lead.
That spirit of achievement continues at the graduate level, where the Graduate College Awards recognized excellence in research, teaching and scholarship among students, faculty and programs across campus. These honorees advance innovation and discovery at Missouri State. Their work aligns with our strategic priorities to expand research and elevate academic excellence.
Recognizing alumni and donors
Our university wouldn’t be what it is without the support of alumni and donors. At the Founders Club Medallion Reception, we welcomed new members and recognized those whose generosity continues to move Missouri State forward. They create opportunities for our students and help us deliver on our mission.
We also celebrated excellence at the Bears of Distinction awards, recognizing alumni and former employees making a meaningful impact every day. This year’s top honorees were former Springfield mayor Ken McClure, longtime voice of the Bears Art Hains and the College of Business Executive Advisory Council. Along with six other Bears of Distinction, they exemplify what it means to be a Bear.
Strategic plan in action
We recently had the opportunity to celebrate the first year of our strategic plan in a way that truly brought it to life. Leaders from across campus came together for a fast-paced, speed dating-style forum, rotating between tables to share progress and ideas behind each initiative. It was energizing to see the collaboration and creativity that continue to drive this work forward.
We also took time to recognize that progress in a fun and meaningful way, with peer-selected awards highlighting the spirit behind our efforts. This is exactly what our strategic plan is about: connecting people, celebrating progress and continuing to build a culture grounded in our public affairs mission and our shared values.
Visit the strategic plan website for more information on implementation progress. We’ll post the end-of-year report there this summer.
This column has been a sampling, not an exhaustive list. These are more than events and celebrations. They reflect who we are.
Thank you to our faculty, staff, students, alumni and supporters who make it all possible.
Because of you, it truly is a great day to be a Bear!
