When people think about economic development, they often picture businesses or industry. But universities have an important role to play.

At Missouri State University, economic development is about creating opportunity. It’s about preparing students for meaningful careers, helping employers meet workforce needs and partnering with communities to solve real-world challenges.

When we do those things well, everyone benefits.

That’s why Community Partnerships and Economic Development is one of the five goals in our strategic plan. To become the nation’s leading public affairs university, we must remain deeply connected to the communities we serve.

Brad Bodenhausen and I have spent much of this year meeting with business and industry leaders across Springfield. We’ve asked a simple question: What do you need from Missouri State?

We’ve heard a consistent message. Employers need talented graduates who are ready to contribute on day one. They are looking for interns and future employees who can think critically, show initiative and communicate effectively. They want partnerships that provide connection to the expertise that resides on our campus. They want help solving problems, developing new ideas and building the workforce that will keep our region competitive.

The good news is Missouri State is well positioned to meet those needs.

Resources such as the Roy Blunt Jordan Valley Innovation Center and efactory connect students, faculty and business partners in meaningful ways. They support innovation, entrepreneurship and applied research while creating valuable opportunities for students to learn alongside industry leaders.

But this work extends far beyond two buildings. Across every college, faculty and staff are building partnerships that connect classroom learning with real-world experience. Those collaborations prepare our students, support employers and create lasting value for Missouri.

I’m thankful to the faculty, staff and community partners who make this work possible. Their commitment demonstrates how economic development and our educational mission strengthen one another.

When we prepare graduates who are ready to contribute, help businesses innovate and strengthen the communities we serve, we’re living our public affairs mission and advancing the vision outlined in our strategic plan.

That’s how we ignite opportunity for our students, our partners and the state of Missouri.

It’s a great day to be a Bear!
