We need to have a brief network outage tonight around midnight to upgrade some equipment. The outage should only be a minute or two and none of the Banner infrastructure will be affected. However, anything originating from a campus network and connecting to Banner or any other outside destinations will be interrupted during this time.
Today at approximately 10:55 a.m. CST, a key networking component breakdown caused a cascade failure that rendered the MSU networks non-operational. Services were restored and all systems appeared to be functional again by 11:15 a.m. We apologize for the interruption in service and are striving to remedy the situation so that it does not occur again.
The cause of the failure is not entirely known, but is likely tied to a known hardware problem or a potential software flaw. Networking and Telecommunications were already aware of this latent problem and had plans to correct the issue in two (2) days on our scheduled Upgrade Day on Sunday, May 27th, 2018 which, of course, is still planned.
Routine upgrades to the University’s mission critical networking, telecommunications, information security, and information systems are necessary to provide reliable and secure services to the University community. These upgrades are scheduled for times when the disruption to the University community is minimized. Departments and users are encouraged to plan accordingly and not expect access to the University’s communications and information technologies during the upgrade period of 12:00 a.m. to 11:59 p.m.
