Network Outage – Resolved

May 6, 2021 by Mark Harsen

The network outage that affected most services on the Springfield campus, including the Cheek Hall data center, has been resolved. All services should have been restored as of 9:22 a.m. this morning. If you are aware of any outages, please report them to Networking@MissouriState.edu immediately.

The core circuit card that failed two days ago and was disabled, today had to physically be removed from the router to restore services. Backup, redundant interfaces are handling all of the load while we seek a replacement card from the manufacturer. We may be required to perform diagnostics on this card which would likely occur on our next scheduled “down day”. Such days are reserved for upgrading and testing various systems and are ideal needs such as this. We apologize for this outage and do not believe it will happen again.

Thank you, Mark

Networking Issues – Resolved

May 4, 2021 by Mark Harsen

The networking issues affecting multiple systems in the Cheek Hall data center, including wireless services throughout the MSU System, have been circumvented. All systems and services should be working without issues. If anyone is still experiencing network outages, unreliable connectivity, or other intermittent issues, please report them immediately to Networking@missouristate.edu.

The issue was traced back to an interface card that has likely failed. We will continue to work with our manufacturer for further diagnostics and ultimate replacement as appropriate. Thank you for your patience and understanding. Our goal is to never experience such an outage. Had the card failed completely, redundant circuits would have allowed all services to continue uninterrupted. Since the card appeared to work intermittently, convergence issues were created that caused the unreliable service.

WORKAROUND: Call 417-319-1372 to reach Missouri State University Numbers

March 23, 2021 by Mark Harsen

We have provisioned a temporary number of 417-319-1372 that rings the University Operators who can transfer your call to any MSU party. If you are an AT&T, Mediacom, or Cricket customer or if you always receive a busy signal when calling any MSU phone number, please call our Operators at 417-319-1372 instead of using the permanent number of 417-836-5000. They will help you reach your intended party.

We have escalated this issue with both AT&T and Windstream. Windstream currently provides inbound telephone service to MSU and we have received reports that at least some other Windstream customers are experiencing the same issues of always receiving busy signals.

If you cannot reach our Operators at this temporary number, please email Telecommunications@missouristate.edu or Mark.Harsen@missouristate.edu. All information is welcome regarding this AT&T/Windstream problem and it could aid in a faster resolution.

Electronic Fax Services Restored with Dialing Changes

July 9, 2020 by Mark Harsen

The Electronic Fax service provided by the Networking and Telecommunications Department has been restored.  The service was updated to remove the dependencies on local FoIP (Fax over Internet Protocol) which was causing some fax transmissions, both inbound and outbound, to fail.  Outbound faxes are now using these new services and inbound faxes will be switched as soon as possible.

This change in trunking, however, required an unexpected change in dialing when sending faxes.  Now, all fax destinations must be treated as a long distance number and all eleven digits are always required (but no long distance charges are assessed).  Authorized users must now use the address of 1 + area code + exchange + phone number @ fax.missouristate.edu.  So to send to a mythical on-campus fax of 6-1234, authorized users would send to 14178361234@fax.missouristate.edu and to send to an off-campus mythical fax of 314-555-1234, use 13145551234@fax.missouristate.edu.  All eleven digits are now always required to send a fax successfully.  Please see the link below for more information:

Electronic Fax Service Outage

July 9, 2020 by Mark Harsen

The Electronic Fax service provided by the Networking and Telecommunications department is currently down. The service was being upgraded to eliminate failed fax transmissions that are caused by too many analog to digital conversions inherent in FoIP – Fax over Internet Protocol. Unfortunately, the upgrade unexpectedly caused the service to go offline. Local and vendor support staff are working as quickly as possible to restore services.

If you have urgent need to receive or transmit any faxes during this outage, please contact Steve Coffman at 417-836-4227 or Mark Harsen at 417-836-4392 to make special arrangements.
