September 5, 2023 by Clif Smart

To all our new faculty and staff members, welcome! It’s great to have you in our Bears family. I hope your time at Missouri State University so far has been positive.

To help our new employees get better settled in, I’d like to highlight some valuable information.

Enjoy perks and discounts

Take advantage of perks and discounts available to MSU employees. They include:

  • Offers from area businesses – check out the Faculty and Staff Discounts blog for more details.
  • Discounted tickets for some sporting and theatre events, and Bears athletics events. If you have kids 12 and under, sign them up for the free Future Bears fan club.
  • Bonus dollars when you purchase Dining Dollars, accepted at any dining location on campus.
  • 10% discount for Bookstore purchases (full-time employees).

Get a new photo

If you’d like a new or updated professional photo of yourself, go to one of the faculty and staff free portrait days. Held once a month, they’re hosted by our photo staff in creative services.

The next one takes place Sept. 14 in the Plaster Student Union, Room 317.

Take time for professional development

Through your My Missouri State, you can access:

  • LinkedIn Learning, where you’ll find a host of free courses in multiple languages.
  • My Learning Connection, the university’s centralized library of classes and trainings.

Engage in public affairs

Each year, the university hosts several signature events to celebrate our public affairs mission.

One of them is coming up soon – the 20th annual Public Affairs Conference scheduled from Sept. 26-28. It features free, in-person speakers and live virtual panel sessions that will explore our 2023-24 public affairs theme, Navigating the Now: Tradition, Innovation and Wisdom in a World of Change.

I hope you’ll join me in attending some of the sessions. As in prior years, employees may use up to two hours of their work time to attend the conference – just coordinate with your supervisors.

Join the Innovation Accelerator

If you have ideas to share about how MSU can improve student success, save money and make progress in other ways, join the university’s first-ever Innovation Accelerator on Oct. 27.

You’ll get to engage in problem solving and creative thinking with co-workers from across the university.

Cheer on our football team

Come and support our Bears football team at their first home game of the season against Utah Tech. It’s at 2 p.m. Sept 23 during Family Weekend.

Faculty and staff members get half-price tickets.

Once again, welcome new employees to the MSU team. I’m glad you’re here and I’m confident you’ll find the university a great place to work!

Thanks for all you do for Missouri State.

Clif’s Notes for July 16, 2019

July 16, 2019 by Clif Smart

Staff at ice cream social

Each new academic year inevitably brings new employees and new roles for existing employees to the university. I want to take a moment to introduce you to two new faces on the university’s leadership team and one familiar face who has taken on a new role.

Jeff Coiner will be our new chief information officer. Jeff comes to Missouri State from the City of Springfield, where he was director of information systems. Jeff will lead and manage all units in the Information Services division. He will oversee system-wide planning, management, security and coordination of technology resources, as well as support the university’s ongoing digital transformation efforts. He succeeds Jeff Morrissey who recently retired.

Mark Smith will be the new dean of the McQueary College of Health and Human Services. Since 2014, Mark has served as the associate dean of the College of Natural and Health Sciences at the University of Northern Colorado (UNC). In the 10 years prior to this appointment, Mark moved through the professorial ranks at UNC. Mark has a Ph.D. in physical education and sport instruction from the University of Georgia. He succeeds Dr. Helen Reid who recently retired.

Finally, Rob Hornberger will be the new associate vice president for enrollment management and services. Rob has worked for Missouri State since 1995, most recently serving as the university’s registrar. He succeeds Don Simpson who recently announced his retirement. Rob will serve a prominent role in the university’s direction as we address imminent enrollment challenges and develop a strategic enrollment management plan in the coming year.

Please join me in congratulating Jeff, Mark and Rob and in welcoming all the new faculty and staff that will be joining the Missouri State University team this year.

Thanks for all you do for Missouri State!

Clif’s Notes for June 26, 2018

June 26, 2018 by Clif Smart

Compensation for faculty and staff is a high priority for me, the Board of Governors and leaders throughout campus.

Last week the board approved a one-time retention payment. Full-time faculty and staff members (including auxiliary and grant-funded employees) will receive a $700 retention payment in their August 2018 paycheck.

To be eligible to receive the payment, you must hold a full-time position on Aug. 1, 2018 and have been employed in a full-time position on or before Jan. 1, 2018.

These payments will cost $1.8 million from university reserves.

Retaining faculty and staff

The budget for fiscal year 2019 includes $276,818 for faculty promotions and the Professor Salary Incentive Program (PSIP). Equity increases were also awarded to 88 employees using existing funds within their administrative unit or academic department. It does not include an across-the-board raise. I know this is disappointing. I am disappointed, too.

While the budgets for fiscal year 2018 and 2019 have not included across-the-board raises, we have prioritized compensation during my presidency. Every year we have centrally funded faculty promotions. We created the PSIP. We funded staff pools for merit and equity increases. We funded across-the-board pay raises each year through fiscal year 2017. But state budget cuts in fiscal year 2018 made pay raises impossible.

The board and I recognize the need to improve compensation for faculty and staff. We set out to fund an across-the-board pay raise in the fiscal year 2019 budget, but our efforts were stymied by state funding cuts recommended earlier this year.

The board approved the one-time retention payment outlined above to address the need to improve employee compensation. We understand this is not an acceptable substitute for an across-the-board compensation increase.

The budget passed by the legislature does not include the budget cuts recommended by the former governor. We appreciate the General Assembly’s commitment to higher education as demonstrated by the reversal of the proposed cuts.

Should we receive the funds appropriated by the legislature for fiscal year 2019, we will reconvene the Executive Budget Committee in the fall to evaluate options for an across-the-board mid-year compensation increase.

Thanks for all you do for Missouri State!
