I wanted to update you on one of Missouri State University’s programs that’s doing some really exciting work – our School of Defense and Strategic Studies (DSS). It’s currently located in Fairfax, Virginia, and will be moving to Arlington, Virginia, in early August. Both locations are just outside Washington, D.C., and frankly, I’m impressed with what they’re accomplishing.

Why this matters now

America faces mounting national security challenges that are unprecedented since the height of the Cold War. We’re dealing with the return of great power competition, particularly with China’s rise. We’re confronting state-sponsored cyber threats against our critical infrastructure. And we’re navigating remarkable changes in global energy markets as the U.S. has emerged as a major energy exporter.

These challenges require well-trained professionals who understand both the technical and strategic aspects of national security.

Our unique position

Our DSS programs serve a diverse student body, with a mix of traditional, mid-career and active-duty military students. The programs are fully accredited by the Missouri Higher Learning Commission and certified by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia.

What makes DSS special is our positioning. Our offices are near the centers of national security power – the White House, Congress, State Department and Pentagon. Our faculty includes experienced professionals with real-world national security experience at senior levels. But we offer Missouri rates and geographic flexibility through online education.

Growing our offerings

The school provides graduate-level education in national security policy, cyber security, Weapons of Mass Destruction proliferation, international terrorism, military operations, global security challenges, foreign policy, arms control and intelligence analysis.

We offer master’s degrees, a professional doctorate and several graduate certificates.

We’re also launching three new certificate programs:

  • National Security Strategy Certificate
  • Great Power Competition Certificate
  • Arms Control and Nonproliferation Certificate

Smart and accessible

All our programs are offered 100% online, though students can also take seated classes or choose a hybrid approach. Our students get a Washington, D.C.-quality education at Missouri prices while learning from faculty who are leading scholars, analysts and policymakers.

These new certificates use courses we already teach, so we’re attracting new students without adding big expenses. That’s smart growth that serves important needs while helping our enrollment.

DSS is training the next generation of national security professionals who understand the complex challenges facing our country. It’s exactly the kind of effort that exemplifies our public affairs mission.

I’d like to thank Dr. John Rose and his team for leading this school so well.

Thanks for checking in. It’s a great day to be a Bear!
