Microgreens Planted In Greenhouse Today

August 7, 2018 by Jennifer Morganthaler

Microgreens were planted in the greenhouse today for the Greenhouse and High Tunnel Workshop Demonstration.  Today’s planting was a small “trial run” consisting of Mild Micro Mix, Spicy Micro Mix and Hong Vit Radish seed from Johnny’s Selected Seed and Chrysanthemum Greens from Kitazawa Seed Co.

Microgreens are seedlings of vegetables and herbs that have 2 fully developed cotyledon leaves that are harvested before the first true leaves emerge. They are nutrient rich and can be used in various dishes.

A 10 x 20 tray without holes was filled 1/2 way with soil. Seeds were then spread heavily according to seed size. .2 oz of Mild, .2 oz of Spicy, .5 oz of Radish and .07 oz of Chrysanthemum were used in this divided container. General recommendations for a full tray are 3 grams for small seeds, 15 grams for middle size and 25 grams for large size seeds.
After seeds were misted with water they were covered with Vermiculite and misted again.
Seeds are then covered until germination. Seeds must be misted and checked every day until germination.
Mild Micro Mix, Spicy Micro Mix and Hong Vit Radish seeds from Johnny’s Select Seeds and Chrysanthemum Greens from Kitazawa Seed Co. were used.
